Accelerated Reader Collection
Accelerated Reader is a nationally recognized reading management program used
at Dunn and at many other schools in Poudre School District. The idea behind
Accelerated Reader is for students to select and read a book in the Accelerated
Reading system, take a computerized comprehension test on the book, and share
the results with the teacher. This is one way we monitor and foster growth
in reading comprehension.
First, we test our students for a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) level
by using a companion program called S.T.A.R.. The ZPD defines the reading level
range from which a student should be selecting Accelerated Reader books for
optimal growth in reading without frustration. Accelerated Reader books in the
Media Center are marked with colored coded spine labels to indicate the reading
level of their readability level:
| Green Circle |
Reading level 0.5-1.9 |
| Yellow Circle |
Reading level 2.0-2.9 |
| Red circle |
Reading level 3.0 to 3.9 |
| Blue circle |
Reading level 4.0 to 6.9 |
| White circle |
Reading level 7.0 and above |
After students have been tested, teachers help them check out Accelerated Reader
books within their ZPD. For example, a student with a ZPD of 2.6 to 3.7 should
check out an Accelerated Reader book with a red circle. Students at Dunn may
select from over 3000 Accelerated Reader titles, including classics, newer
fiction, and some nonfiction books. When students finish reading a book, they
take the Accelerated Reader comprehension test. Students earn points as they
pass tests. Individual classrooms have established procedures for implementing
Accelerated Reader. Please ask your child's teacher for information about how
Accelerated Reader is used in the classroom.
Visit the Renaissance Learning website to learn more about Accelerated Reader and to view sample quizzes.
Our Accelerated Reader book collection may be accessed online. Just choose the
spreadsheet that would be most helpful. Printouts of the spreadsheets are kept
in the blue Accelerated Reader Index notebooks housed by the lookup stations
in the Media Center.
