Spring 1999
A. H. Dunn was born on August 14, 1866 in East Poland, Maine. He
grew up in a rural manufacturing region and was taught by his father
because of the poor conditions of the local schools at that time. Mr.
Dunn was taught a variety of subjects, but mathematics and Latin were
considered to be the most important. Both were prerequisites for
college. Mr. Dunn's parents were educated compared to most other
people in the community and they wanted their children to have a good
education too. Dunn graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine,
with honors at the age of only nineteen.
While teaching high school in Alfred, Maine, he met Miss Sarah
Littlefield. They were married September 5, 1889. After their
marriage, the Dunns moved to Fairplay, CO where he had taught the
previous year. He taught in Golden the following two years, and then
moved to Fort Collins in 1893 to become the principal of the local
high school. He held many offices within the local, state, and
national school systems. He was an advocate of international
diversity. He passed away in 1956 after living a long and full
life.
