The Middle Years Program (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organization is a course of study designed to meet the educational requirements of students aged between 11 and 16 years (Grades 6-10). The flexibility of the program allows for the demands of state and local content standards to be met. Students are encouraged to question and evaluate information critically, to seek out and explore the links between subjects, and to develop an awareness of their place in the world. Learning how to learn and how to evaluate information critically is as important as the content of the disciplines themselves. While insisting on a thorough study of the various academic subjects, the MYP accentuates their interrelatedness and advances a holistic view of knowledge. Students are encouraged to develop intercultural awareness along with genuine understanding of their own history and traditions. In stressing communication, the MYP places fundamental importance on achieving firm command of one's own language and on the acquisition of a foreign language for effective conversation. It also aims to develop awareness of the media and competence in information technology.
The student's intellectual and social development is the focus of the Middle Years Program. Five ideas known as the areas of interaction make the program distinctive. These are not academic subjects but common themes embedded within and visible across the specific disciplines. They are addressed through the subject areas. The five areas of interactions are:

Approaches to Learning: The area concerned with learning how to learn. It involves the development and practice of:

  • study, research, and test taking skills
  • critical and higher level thinking
  • problem solving skills
  • using "Quality Check" criteria
  • taking charge of your own learning
  • teamwork and team spirit
  • acceptance of the uniqueness of individuals and cultures

Community Service: The area that focuses on responsible citizenship in the world outside the classroom. It involves:

  • participating in service to others in our community
  • participating in activities within our school
  • reflecting on the needs of others and benefits provided to our community

Health and Social Education: The area concerned with the total development of the person and of society. It involves:

  • making responsible decisions regarding self, family, community, and environment
  • choosing healthy lifestyles
  • personal growth in school and social areas

Environment: The area concerned with the interdependence of humans and nature. It involves:

  • developing insight into local and global environmental concerns
  • developing awareness of the connections of the environment to all subjects and aspects of life: science, social, political, economic, and cultural

Homo Faber (Human Creativity): The area concerned with appreciation of the creative and inventive genius of people. It involves:

  • learning about the influences of human inventions and discoveries on past and present life
  • constructing innovative and creative products related to course topics
