TAKING THE PSAT and PLAN... The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test) is administered in the fall to college-bound students. Colleges commonly consider these scores for recruiting purposes, and PSAT scores are used for determination of finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Colleges also often use PSAT scores for distribution of their own merit scholarships. It is good practice and gets top-scoring students on top-college recruiting lists early. Also, it provides flexibility if a student should decide he/she wants to graduate from high school early. The PLAN is a pre-ACT test and is administered by the makers of the American College Test (ACT). Students will take the test in the fall of their sophomore year at no charge to the student (much like all juniors will take the ACT test at no charge). In addition to its curriculum-based tests in English, math, reading, and science reasoning, it includes a needs assessment, a course information report, the UNIACT Interest Inventory, and the Educational Opportunity Service. The focus of the PLAN is on measuring what students know and what they are able to do with that information. It is closely related to the ACT in content and structure, so taking it is a good predictor of success on the ACT. The PSAT test will be given in the morning and the PLAN test will be given in the afternoon on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 in the gymnasium. The PLAN test is mandatory for all Sophomores and is administered at no charge. Sophomores will be school excused from their afternoon classes to complete the test. The cost of the PSAT test is $20. Registration for the PSAT will begin on September 17, 2007 and continue through the 28th. Only a limited number of tests will be available. Priority spaces will be given to juniors for the PSAT. Please pay Connie VanDoren, bookkeeper. Once you've paid, stop by the Career Center to sign up and pick up your study packet. |
