Choosing An Instrument

Students with interest in learning a musical instrument should consider all instrument types before making a decision.  Some instruments will be better suited than others, and how the instrument looks, feels, and sounds should be considered.  Contact the music director if you have trouble choosing.  The director may be able to help you choose the instrument that is the best fit for you.  Remember that only certain instruments are used in each ensemble.

To give you a start, we recommend that you visit www.beginband.com and explore all the instruments available.

Which Instrument and which ensemble are right for you?

Beginning Orchestra players must choose Violin, Viola, Cello, or String Bass
Beginning Band choices are Flute, Clarinet, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, BaritoneTuba, or Percussion*.  *Students choosing percussion must have 2 years of piano proficiency prior to 7th gradeThose wishing to play saxophone will start on clarinet, and may switch to sax after the first year.

If you choose cello, string bass, French horn, baritone, or tuba, be sure to contact the director, as many of these are available free of charge from the school.

Brass Family The name of this family of instruments describes the material from which many of them are constructed. These are all played by buzzing one's lips in a mouthpiece which is attached to a tube, which shapes the tone. Most have valves to change pitches, but some have slides. These instruments are played in Band and Full Orchestra. Click the name above to explore the different instruments in this family.

Woodwind Family The name of this family of instruments describes the material from which many of them are constructed. Some of these instruments are played by blowing over an open hole, using one's fingers to cover holes or keys to change pitches. Others require a flexible reed to be played between the lower lip and the mouthpiece. These instruments are played in Band and Full Orchestra. Click the name above to explore the different instruments in this family.

Percussion Family The Percussion family is full of instruments that are struck or that strike themselves to make sound. While drums are in this family, there are no drummers in the Lincoln bands because all students learn to become proficient on all the instruments in this family to become "percussionists." These instruments are played in Band and Full Orchestra. Click the name above to explore the different instruments in this family.

String Family The string family of instruments all clearly have strings and are played with bows which are drawn across the strings to create a vibration which is amplified by the hollow body of the instrument . These instruments are played in Orchestra and Full Orchestra. Click the name above to explore the different instruments in this family.
