Poudre High School currently offers French, German and Spanish through level 5.
Each language has the same course description for each level.
Each level is 2 semesters.
Level 1
Students are introduced to vocabulary and structures and emphasis is also placed on listening and speaking skills. Activities include dialogs, novice readings, listening selections and written communication. Students experience language through the study of cultures, while making connections and comparisons to their native language and developing communication skills in the target language. The study of a world language prepares students to compete in a global community. Students also study the countries and the culture of the people where the language is spoken.
Level 2
Students increase vocabulary and structures. Continued emphasis is on oral proficiency. Activities include dialogs, readings, listening selections and written communication. Students experience language through the study of cultures, while making connections and comparisons to their native language and developing communication skills in the target language. The study of a world language prepares students to compete in a global community. Students continue learning about the areas of the world where the language is spoken.
Level 3
Students enhance vocabulary and expand structures. Activities include conversations, authentic readings, intermediate listening selections and written communication. Students experience language through the study of cultures, while making connections and comparisons to their native language and developing communication skills in the target language. The study of a world language prepares students to compete in a global community. Class activites include simulated conversations, skits, written and oral exercises, and reading of short stories. There is continued stress of development of higher-level proficiency in the four basic skills.
Level 4
Students expand vocabulary and refine structures. Activities include conversations, authentic readings, intermediate listening selections and written communication. Students experience language through the study of cultures, while making connections and comparisons to their native language and developing communication skills in the target language. The study of a world language prepares students to compete in a global community.
Level 5
Students solidify vocabulary and apply structures as independent learners in preparation for the AP exam. Activities include conversations, authentic readings, advanced listening selections and written communication. Students experience language through the study of cultures, while making connections and comparisons to their native language and developing communication skills in the target language. The study of a world language prepares students to compete in a global community. This course is designed to continue on a more sophisticated level with the skills acquired in the previous four years of language study. Various works of literature are examined Students give oral presentations and create special projects to internalize their language skills as well as having a complete review of grammar. Plays, short stories, novels, and poems in the language are read discussed.
