Preston STEM Extra-Curricular Activities
Preston STEM is not all about quality instruction in math, science, language arts and social studies and the arts. Preston also emphasizes four major extra-curricular activities; First Robotics, MathCounts, Science Olympaid and Science Fair.
FIRST Robotics
Preston offers robotics both as an after-school and in-school option. The extra-curricular robotics component is First Lego League and, new in 2010-11, First Tech Challenge. In 2009, Preston had 7 competitive FLL teams with 6 qualifying for the Colorado State FLL Tournament and in 2010, there were 8 teams and 6 qualifiers. In 2008, the Hawaiian Caribou, Preston's all-girl FLL team earned an invitation to the US Open Tournament in Dayton, Ohio.
MathCounts 
Preston has fielded a MathCounts team since 2004 and over the years has competed in and won or placed in the Northern Region Tournament or at the State Tournament. Preston has been a MathCounts Gold School in 2008 and 2009.
Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad has been an extra-curricular option almost since the Preston opened in 1994. In 2009, Preston placed 2nd in Division B (Middle School) and in 2010, Preston won the State Tournament and went to The University of Illinois for the National Science Olympiad Tournament.
Science Fair
Experimentation and research are emphasized at Preston and all Honors Science students are expected to conduct a science fair project. The local fair is held in early December, regionals in January and the State Science Fair is held in Denver in February.
