Preston STEM Research Projects

Preston STEM is about learning how scientists conduct research. Beginning with the scientific method, students learn how to identify problems using data that they have gathered, look for solutions that have already been tried and design new and unique solutions.

Beginning in the fall of 2011, all Preston 6th graders will take a quarter-long research and presentation class as a part of their elective wheel of art, technology, and computer science. The focus of this class will be to learn how to conduct resarch and then how to communicate findings using a variety of media.

Examples of Research

Preston joined with Lincoln Middle School in the fall of 2010 to study Poudre water quality in preparation for a formal report regarding the potential environmental impact of injection a proposed uranium mining operation in northern Larimer County. See the article in the Coloradoan on January 13, 2011.

CoCoRahs stands or Community, Collaborative, Rain, Hail and Snow Network and is a long-term climate research project out of Colorado State University's Atmospheric Sciences Department. Study participants make reports daily and the data is consolidated and made available to researchers world-wide. See the CoCoRahs website for more information.
