Thank you for Teacher Appreciation Week! PRINCIPAL REFLECTIONS

This week the staff workroom was transformed into a slice of heaven! The angels (who are the Shepardson parents) under the direction of PTO Staff Appreciation Coordinator Jean Pearson, delivered heavenly foods, special notes of kindness, and good humor that have enabled this staff to relax and enjoy each other during the busiest month of the year. As only one day's example, the workroom became a tropical island filled with music and Hawaiian foods. It felt like walking into a calm respite; some of us even thought we heard waves. It is difficult to describe the appreciation we have for all of you! Having you working beside us makes us feel valued and rejuvenated as "together we reach for the stars!" Thanks to all of the parents who made this week so special!

This week we have attached a survey to parents in an effort to establish a group of parents/community members who would be willing to help us in our efforts to better meet the needs of our Second Language Learners. We've had several parents offer their assistance already! PTO has also taken a strong leadership role to ensure that Shepardson is a welcoming place for these new families who are not fluent in English. The outreach of the Shepardson community to this special population is heartwarming. We so appreciate your efforts and enthusiasm to assist us in making this addition of diversity to Shepardson be an enriching experience in understanding, tolerance, and friendship. Thank you!

Congratulations Anita Martinez! CONGRATULATIONS, ANITA MARTINEZ

On May 1st, Anita Martinez was selected as the Rotary Clubs of Fort Collins' Teacher of the Year! We were first amazed that the filled ballrooms in the Marriott were congregated for this one event only. The thrill and surprise on Anita's face when she was named Teacher of the Year was a sight to behold! We thank her for all of her consistent efforts and loving dedication to work with diverse needs of her students. In her acceptance speech, she thanked the entire Shepardson community for supporting and encouraging her in her simple quest of teaching each child. Congratulations, Anita!

    PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE ART SHOW

Congratulations to the third and fourth graders who have their Amazon animal drawings displayed in the Principal's office for fourth quarter. Mollie Pearson, Jordan Jacobson, Cayley Chiodo, and Marlena Murray had lunch with Dr. Sommers, Mr. Smith, and Mrs. Pibal and a lively discussion about their artwork.

    ENRICHMENT SURVEY REMINDER!

Your opinion is needed! You should have received an Enrichment Report and Parent's Survey with last week's newsletter. If you haven't completed your survey and returned it to school yet, please do so as soon as possible! Your opinion and input will be important to us as we make plans for next year's program.

Contact Becky Woodcox, Enrichment Coordinator, if you have any questions or need another copy of the survey. She can be contacted by calling the school or by e-mail at bwoodcox@psd.k12.co.us.

    LOBOS FOOTBALL TECHNIQUE CAMP 2002

From June 10 -13, the Rocky Mountain High School Football Program will conduct its third annual Lobos Football Technique Camp. Designed for young athletes (ages 7 - 13) who want hands-on instruction in the game of football, this four day non-contact camp will focus on offensive and defensive fundamentals for each gridiron position.

Flyers and brochures with specific information may be found on the table just outside the school office.

    REPLACEMENT OF KITE

Many thanks to the parents who became actively involved in the selection of a new vendor to replace KITE (Kindercare) next year as our "before and after" school care. Not only did we listen to presentations, but we also researched their effectiveness and our confidence in their program as best we could.

We have decided on BASE Camp as our provider next year. It is local non-profit organization that is serving most of the elementary schools in Fort Collins. There sole purpose and focus is this type of program. A flyer is attached to invite you to talk with them about their program; you can arrange to sign up at that time for next year. We encourage you to share your expectations so that the program will be designed that best meets your needs. BASE Camp will be running in the same flex room on the first day of school next year!

SIT UPDATE : APRIL 25TH MEETING

    SIT Elections:

Vacancies for 2002-2003 include three At Large Parent representatives and three staff representatives and the Community representative position. May 9th was the deadline for parents to express interest in the vacancies. Ballots will be published May 16 if there are enough candidates for each vacancy to run an election. Ballots would be due on the 22 of May and newly elected or appointed reps will be invited to attend the May 23d SIT meeting. The ballot to be used was reviewed and time-line changes made.

Continued service of Facilitator Marcia Burns was unanimously approved. Recorder Noelle Maestas-Burger. who has a 6th grade child, will be leaving Shepardson, making this position vacant for next year. Both of these parents have served SIT in exemplary ways.

If there is anyone interested in the Community representative position (or if you know of anyone who would be interested) please contact Mary Kay Sommers.

    Boundary Issue:

It was reported that some of the plans being discussed at the district

level will not necessarily affect Shepardson boundaries, but may affect those in the Shepardson community as some plans change the boundaries for Junior High Schools. Richard Santoro is the parent Rep for Shepardson. Any questions, requests for information or concerns regarding boundary issues should be directed to him.

    NEWSLETTER HELPER STILL NEEDED

THANKS TO EVERYBODY WHO CALLED KEVIN TO VOLUNTEER TO HELP WITH THE NEWSLETTER

Not! Okay guys, I didn't get a single phone call. The only volunteer I got was Mary Kay and she already works 24-7. I know almost every parent is computer literate in this school. I really need a helper. We are talking 1 or 2 hours next week and then maybe 8 hours next year. Come on, show me some love! I'll even give you double the amount they pay me when you sub for me. Please call Kevin Smith at 282-7300 if you can help with preparing the newsletter next week and/or being my substitute occasionally next year. Don't assume somebody else will call.

THANK YOU, NEWSLETTER TEAM, THANK YOU!

Special thanks to Tia Oblender, Jean Pearson, Debbie Ramsey and Sonia Van Zyl for all of their work in helping us get the newsletter to our families this year. Cindy Mueller and LaDeane Cutter have typed articles each week. Kevin Smith has dedicated time to put the text into this attractive format. Dave Roschke transfers it to our website. We really appreciate and all that you have done! Thanks again!

    Tree Planters TREE PLANTING

The Student Council and the PTO purchased a large Honey Locust Shademaster tree for the 5/6 playground in recognition of Arbor Day. There was an all school assembly at which student council members shared the history of Earth Day which started in 1970. They also reminded us of the important reasons to protect our environment. Six students' names were drawn from the "I Care and I Showed It" box and they helped plant the tree. Hopefully, this tree will provide needed shade for students and the community for years to come!
