| Attendance Line Number - 490-3062 | August 29, 2003 |
Next week we are looking forward to having Listening Conferences with each family. We know and honor that YOU know your child best. By learning more about your child's strengths, interests and struggles as well as your personal goals for your children, we can work closely together to help your child achieve at high levels. We thank you in advance for making this commitment to attend your child's conference and for all the support you can give your child at home. If by chance you are unable to make it, please call the school and we will find another time to meet. Our goal is 100%!
New families may not know that we send home newsletters to the YOUNGEST or ONLY child who attends Shepardson. Please look for this information every Friday in September and May and on alternating weeks during the rest of the school year. This format reduces the paper that you will be receiving at home. Let the office know if you want a different child to carry home these papers. Thanks to former parent, Dave Roschke, each newsletter is posted on our website. If you prefer to access it that way, let us know.
We also collect many other items of interest that we do not send home. These are kept in a slot system to the left of the entryway into the Media Center. These are near the picture of Margaret Shepardson, for whom our school was named.
We are actively in the process of training students for safety procedures. Your child may be talking about Fire and Lockdown drills. Parents of young children may need to further explain why we do Lockdown Drills. We try not to frighten them and will give them information that is appropriate for their age. Our first fire drill was outstanding! We had all students in a safe location and accounted for within 3 minutes! We appreciate your support in helping your child understand these safety procedures.
There are many opportunities for parents and students to take an active part in our school community. We invite you to participate as often as you can; most of these events are described in our newsletters. We want all students, their families, the staff and the community to feel a strong sense of belonging to the Shepardson community. We value each person's strengths and contributions to helping our school provide the best learning and growing opportunities for tomorrow's leaders...our students...your children! We thank you for all you can do to be an active player in the educational program for all of the Shepardson students! Parents do indeed make a difference!

Greetings! For those of you who are new to the Shepardson Elementary community. My name is Rea Kreider and I am the school counselor, as well as the Administrative Assistant to Mary Kay. My responsibilities at Shepardson are quite varied, but generally fall into one of the following categories.
As you can see, the role of the elementary school counselor is quite varied, and also very important. I am proud of the contributions I have been able to make at Shepardson during the last three years, and I have plans for how our counseling program could improve even more. Watch for future articles in upcoming newsletters about Red Ribbon Week activities, Student Council updates, and ways you as parents can support your children's social development and the counseling program here at Shepardson.
This past year's District Track Meet was another successful one. I was very proud of all the participants from Shepardson. The students showed excellent sportsmanship and behavior and I was pleased with the way that they stayed and cheered each other on. I would like to thank all of the parents, friends and families for coming and supporting this event.
Special congratulation goes to the 5Th grade girls relay team consisting of Marlena Murray, Laura Kollar, Kailyn Emory, and Carol Kennedy as they were crowned District Champions in the girls 300 Meter relay. Many other students placed in the top ten of their events in the meet and all results will be posted on the bulletin board in the gym. If you would like a copy of the results please stop by and see Mr. Neal.
Looking for a COOL volunteer opportunity? Join me in the Computer Lab. Not only is it air conditioned, but we have COOL new computers! I would be happy to welcome any parents as Computer Lab volunteers. No special experience necessary - just be there to give the students a little extra one-on-one and TLC as I teach them in the Computer Lab. Volunteers for grades K-3 are the most urgent need, but I would appreciate help in grades 4-6 as well. Drop in and see me at the school, or e-mail me at bwoodcox@psd.k12.co.us for additional information or to check the schedule for your child's class.
Also, I would appreciate donations of softsoap and wet wipes for use in the Computer Lab. When you come visit, you will see that we have these beautiful WHITE keyboards. I'm encouraging the kids to have clean hands, and it's working! I'll be most appreciative for a supply of soap and wipes.
Thanks for your support!

It's time kick off another year for the Shepardson Enrichment Program!
All we need is volunteers like YOU! Please join the Shepardson Enrichment Team! Be an Enrichment Volunteer OR give us a GREAT idea! I'm especially anxious to find coaches and volunteers for our Science Olympiad Team and Robotics Team, with kick off dates the later part of September for these teams. These are great opportunities for our kids - all we need are some willing volunteers to help us get these and other Enrichment opportunities off and running.
Attached to this week's newsletter is an Enrichment Program flyer and volunteer sign-up sheet. Please look for it, fill out the form, and return it to the school. You can help us make this another great year for Enrichment at Shepardson by volunteering or offering your ideas for the program! For additional information, please contact Becky Woodcox at 226-6370 or by e-mail at bwoodcox@psd.k12.co.us.
It's hard to believe that Shepardson is 25 years old! We are planning a festive celebration for the community and especially for students and families who are and have attended Shepardson. We will also be honoring two of the original teaching team who retired last spring (Patty Bell and Barb Hyland.) Please put this date on your calendar and watch for more details next week.

Shepardson's Cub Scout pack 194 is now recruiting all 1st through 5th grade boys. Come join us as we learn about the environment, our families, our community, and how to help others. We have fun filled den meetings with other Scouts at the same grade level. We have exciting Pack meetings and Pack events including the Blue and Gold Banquet, Pinewood Derby, Space Derby, Rocket Launch and overnight theme camps. An informational meeting and sign-up will be held September 11 at 7 pm in the Shepardson Gym or call Byron Alcorn at 226-5590.
Thanks to all of our wonderful community volunteers! The VIPS notebook is now in place on the ledge by the office for you to log in your volunteer hours. Just fill out a green sheet and file it under your last name. Every volunteer must fill out an application, but this year you may do so on line. Go to the Poudre School District web site at www.psdschools.com. Click on Programs, then Partnerships and Volunteers. Then click on Volunteers. Click the online link. Or if you prefer, paper applications are available in the front pocket of the VIPS notebook.
We have many volunteer opportunities available, so please help us out by sharing your time and talents. Please send the green volunteer sheet to school with your child as soon as possible. Thank you for volunteering.

The Larimer County Health Department has recently declared a health emergency in light of the rapidly increasing number of cases of West Nile Virus. As the new school year begins, parents are encouraged to consider using insect spray containing DEET on their children before they come to school and for everyone before participating or attending outdoor activities that may be held during the hours from dusk to dawn. DEET products should not be kept at school for application by school staff. Think FROST!
