Phew! CSAPs are behind us for another year. It felt like a long testing window this year, beginning in February for 3rd graders, continuing on after spring vacation up until the first week of April. Congratulations to all students in grades 3-6 for your outstanding efforts and your perseverance. Thanks to all you parents for your support in sending your children to school well rested, for re-arranging dentist or doctor appointments and for encouraging your children to give their best effort. Thanks to Mrs. Bucher and the School Spirit Committee for giving up your recesses and free time to provide snacks for all students testing each day. Thanks to Mrs. Swets and Mrs. Aberegg for notifying all visitors and screening telephone calls so testing sessions were not interrupted. Thanks to the classroom teachers, special education teachers, ESL teachers and paraprofessionals for all the effort you put into arranging schedules, making accommodations, counting, checking and double checking test booklets and completing all testing according to schedule. The last few weeks have truly been a team effort!
During that time, the Shepardson Student Council has continued its service to this community and to the greater world community. The "Cuddles and Comfort" project collected literally a van load of stuffed animals, games, puzzles and books that were donated to the Larimer County Child Advocacy Center. Hopefully you saw the article and pictures in Wednesday's Coloradoan about our collection of over 200 pairs of shoes for children in Iraq. (By the way, we are now looking for ways to afford the shipping costs of these shoes. Anyone with ideas or suggestions, please contact Gayle Eberhardt or Theresa Konopczynski.) Earth Day is fast approaching, and the Earth Day Committee is planning a variety of activities to help Shepardson students learn about the importance of water conservation. They are planning educational morning announcements and guest speakers, making a donation to the local chapter of Sierra Club from two weeks' profits at our school store and the beginning stages of a beautification project around the flagpole and school sign in front of the school. For more information on this project please contact Rea Kreider or Margie Bucher. The last Community Service project for this school year will be the "Pennies for Patients" coin collection for children suffering from Leukemia, Lymphoma or other blood related cancers. The committee has set a goal of $500 for this project and has planned a unique and fun way to collect the coins. We will be starting this collection the week of April 26th. Watch for a letter from this student committee coming soon in your child's folder explaining more about this meaningful project.
It is with pride that I announce to you that the Shepardson Student Council has received well-deserved recognition from the National Association of Elementary School Principals as an "Honor Student Council of Excellence." We will be announcing this to the students at our meeting on Friday, April 16th and will toast our good work with juice, cake and balloons.
We have received the results of this year's Student Attitude Survey and I plan to report to you about this in our next newsletter. Until then, enjoy the return of a beautiful spring.

The Poudre School District student art exhibition, Designs & Images, is currently on display at the Foothills Mall. The exhibit features work from schools K-12 & is a vehicle for celebrating the artistic accomplishments of students that result from good art instruction. Like language or mathematics, art involves the use of complex symbols to communicate. If you have a chance to view the exhibition, please keep in mind the 'products' you see are the result of a problem solving process taught by art educators. With limited space art teachers choose work that shows what is learned from a curriculum perspective. The Shepardson art display is located in front of Foley's and runs April 13 - April 27. |
Watch for the New Spring Activity Guide - It's one stop shopping for community opportunities!

The Youth Sport Camps, June 1 - August 6, at Colorado State University offer one and two week long day camps in a variety of sports and physical activities for children ages 5 - 14.Outstanding facilities, well-trained staff, and innovative programming focusing on skill development and lifetime fitness all combine to make the CSU Youth Sport Camps an enjoyable and productive way for campers to spend their summer days.
Multiple one-week sessions are open for soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball, inline hockey, softball, and tennis. The two-week long Super Sports Camp sessions feature a focus sport activity as well as roller-skating, rock climbing, field trips, and other enrichment activities. Taryn Hunt and Marlena Murray have served as student representatives on the STARS committee this school year. Both girls have done an incredible job, not only contributing ideas and concerns during our regular monthly meetings, but they have developed some great videos (under the direction of Mrs. Pibal) to demonstrate the Teach To's to our students. These clips show our students the appropriate behaviors and expectations that we have here at Shepardson. They have been made in a fun and captivating way. A big THANK YOU goes to Taryn and Marlena for their time and hard work. We'll miss these two outstanding sixth graders. Looking ahead to next year, we have Miranda Blas and Marci Witczak who will be stepping in to fill these student representative positions. Their enthusiasm already shows.

Recently we put a plea in our newsletter for a parent to come forward and volunteer to manage the school store for the 2004-2005 school year. As of this date we have had no response for this position. May 7this the last school store for this year, but unfortunately the school store will close for good, unless someone steps forward.
If interested call Cheryl Chvatal at 223-2789 or Rea Krieder at 226-6370.
Each year, as we begin collecting information about the number of different people who have volunteered their time and energy during the school year at Shepardson, we are amazed. To help get a more accurate count, we have asked volunteers to sign in at the front office. From that process we know of just over 100 different adults who came to our school to volunteer, but that does not take into account the number of different times any one person signed the book, or how many hours each of those people spent helping. We also know that not everyone who volunteers signs in. For example, we hear PTO members, who volunteer countless hours both at school and at home, joke with each other about how they forgot to sign the book! Regardless, whether it be the correction of worksheets, being a guest reader, helping on a field trip, organizing a classroom celebration, being a pod rep, serving on a committee, leading an enrichment activity, supervising the school store, assembling the newsletter, mentoring a child one on one, or one of a hundred other possibilities, we would not be the quality school we are without the incredible, unselfish support of our volunteers. From the faculty, from the students, from the parents, from the bottom of our hearts....THANK YOU!
During the week there will be a basket of small gifts next to the sign in book for anyone who has volunteered at Shepardson this year. Please, please take one. The gifts may be small, but they represent huge amounts of appreciation.
