This week was Staff Appreciation Week! The special work of so many parents truly helped us to feel highly appreciated. Jeanne Pearson as chair of this week did another incredible job this year. Stars with all of our names and a huge banner with student signatures are hanging in the Media Center and every day a clever message greeted us when we arrived. The workroom has been transformed with incredible food from parents of every grade. Special thanks to these parents:
Many parents sent us cards and gave us special gifts that brought us smiles, warmth and tears of joy. Your caring and "above and beyond" efforts are truly beyond words. We thank you for all you do for every one of us.

You may have noticed that small yellow card your child brought home from school this week. The Poudre School District Counselors are sponsoring the Pass It Forward project again this year and here's how it works. Elementary school students in Kindergarten through 6th grade across the district each receive a Pass It Forward card and are challenged to think of something kind and/or generous they could do for someone else. After they have done that act of kindness, they pass this yellow card forward to that person who will hopefully do something kind for someone they interact with. The kids have fun giving compliments and cards back and forth to each other, but we hope the cards will branch out beyond their immediate group of friends and into the larger community. Our goal is to initiate thousands of acts of kindness that will start thousands of chain reactions of kindness that will ripple through our community, our state and beyond. Each card has a unique number and if people will visit the website listed on the card and register their card, we can track where the cards travel. Last year we know that many cards got outside Colorado, into other states, Mexico, Canada and one even got to the Middle East! This year we also introduced green cards in the Junior High Schools and orange cards to High School students. So far we have had one green card floating around Shepardson. This activity is, of course optional, but we hope it provides a simple yet powerful way for us to help children learn that a well-placed act of kindness can possibly affect a large number of people, and in some small way, bring a bit more peace to our world.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead
The funds PTO generates enhances many different aspects of the school program, from an extensive Enrichment Program, Staff Development/Training support, Media/Computer/Literacy support, to the purchase of classroom fans and many additional instructional items. None of these would be possible without the support of the PTO funding. Thank you! This week the entire student body enjoyed another assembly, also made possible from PTO funds. Groupo Folklorico, a traditional and colorful Hispanic dance group, kept us engaged as we learned to appreciate the beauty and enthusiasm found in these cultural differences. We felt as if we were in Mexico and we all were eager to clap and move to the festive rhythm as we celebrated Cinco de Mayo with this professional group. What a fun experience for all of us! |
Shepardson students reached a new high this week! The Reading CSAP scores of the third graders showed that 96% of them were at or above proficient! That is an incredible feat and speaks strongly to the hard work of the students, the dedication and differentiation techniques used by the staff, and the support and encouragement of the parents. It is truly an honor to work in a school setting where everyone helps the students "reach for the stars!" Way to go, Third Graders!!!
Parents, your child's personal report will be coming home soon with your child in an envelope. Please contact us if you need more information.
The rest of the CSAP scores for grades 3-6 will not be released until early August. These reports will be sent home as soon as we can after school starts.
If your student is interested in basketball, CSU is offering a variety of summer basketball camps for boys and girls.

A new Southeast Family Storytime from the Fort Collins Public Library is being held every Saturday morning, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. at the Fort Collins Youth Clinic South. All ages are welcome.
Funded by the Friends of the Library, this new Southeast Family Storytime will begin to address needs for library services in a quadrant of the City brimming with young families. The Fort Collins Youth Clinic, located at 1214 Oak Park Drive, is partnering with the library and donating space and staff to allow the family storytime to be held at a time the clinic is otherwise closed. A $5 per student registration fee is required along with proof of income. Junior high students need to bring their social security number as well. For more information, please call 482-4357.
The PSD Summer music program is rapidly approaching. All 6th grade students registered for 7th grade band or orchestra in the fall are strongly encouraged to attend the summer program. Classes are held daily from June 1 through July 9 at various school sites. We also welcome 6th grade students who would like to try a new instrument in the summer, even if they didn't sign up for band or orchestra in the fall.
Complete information about the PSD Summer Music Program can be found at www.psdschools.com/music. For specific questions call the Summer Music Information Line at 490-3619. IMPORTANT NOTE: All classes previously scheduled for RMHS have been moved to Webber Junior High, 4201 Seneca Street. Times have not changed.
Registration for the free Summer Reading Program for children through 6th grade begins at all Fort Collins Public Library locations (Main and Harmony) on Friday, May 14 and continues all summer long.
The 2004 theme, "Imagination Station" focuses on the many journeys of the mind available through books, reading and programs at the library. To participate, kids read, or are read to, for five hours, and then choose from a super selection of prizes like a miniature golf pass or free book. After another five hours of reading, they may select another prize, for a total of two prizes over the summer. Grand Prize drawings will also be held for Fort Fun and Elitch Gardens passes.
Each child can also be a Reader to the Rescue. A local charitable trust donates one dollar for every extra five hours of reading to an animal rescue project. This year young readers will be helping the Save a Manatee Club to rescue manatees, that strange looking sea mammal that sailors from olden days thought were mermaids!
Additional Free events are planned June 14 - July 31:
Mondays--outdoor shows with magic, puppets, drumming, clown antics, pet antics, storytelling, and music
Tuesday and Thursday mornings--storytimes
Tuesday nights and Wednesdays: Puppet shows galore
Plus: storytelling, writing workshops, children's fractured fairy tale theatre and more.
