Election Day at Shepardson -- Student Voting
    PRINCIPAL REFLECTIONS

Attendance is a critical factor in a child's ability to learn and retain skills. We want to thank all of our parents for their outstanding attention to ensuring that their healthy children are at school as often as possible. We reached a new high this first quarter with 297 students (61%) having Perfect Attendance! We also have NO parents who will need to receive the form letter regarding absences of 10 of more. While we only want students who are healthy enough to listen and be actively engaged in the learning process, we appreciate all of our parents making attendance a priority. As I hear parents say, learning is your child's "job" at this age. Regular attendance is also an important value and habit to instill for them to be successful in the workplace.

All report cards came home last week! These official reports are yours to keep as before. Teachers will keep a copy. If you found any typographical or other kinds of errors, please let your child's teacher know. We want to make these changes before our next reporting. We are confident enough to establish one day for distribution next quarter: January 10th.

Election Day was highly successful here! Students lined up and followed similar procedures as they would at an official polling place. They used a real voting booth, thanks to the third and fourth grade team. The results were close to national results:

    Bush:   146        Coors:   115        Musgrave:   108
    Kerry:
    142
    Salazar:
    120
    Matsunaka:
    125

Thanks for engaging your children in learning how to help their voice be heard in a democracy!

Have a great weekend with your family,

    Mary Kay

    AUTHOR, AUTHOR, HERE WE COME!

Rotary Read Week is coming! Next week, November 8 through the 14th Shepardson students have a chance to win an author visit just by reading. Each day of next week, students are asked to read fifteen (15) minutes per day. A check mark in each day's box will be the record of their reading. Both the student and a parent should sign the form before bringing it back to school.

On Monday, November 15th, bring the form to Ms. Bucher and each reader will receive a pencil from the Rotary Clubs for reading. After the forms are returned to Rotary Clubs, some lucky students at Shepardson will be winners of $10.00 gift certificates to a local bookstore. The real prize that all of Shepardson will be trying to win will be a visit to our school in the spring by author, Kathleen Duey. Let's READ!

    PINATA DECORATING CONTEST

The Great Colorado Flea Marketplace is hosting La Fiesta de Deciembre (December Festival) with activities such as Latin American Music and Dance, Tastes of Latin America, and a piñata decorating contest. Schools are invited to create one piñata that will be displayed at the Marketplace starting on December 5, 2004, where the general public will vote on the piñatas. The winning school will be awarded a check for $500. Smaller check amounts will be awarded to those schools selected as 2nd and 3rd place winners. If there are any Shepardson parents interested in doing this project with their child and his/her class, please contact the art teacher, Lori Pibal, for more information.
