The staff cannot possibly thank parents enough for the incredible Staff Appreciation Week! It is truly a highlight of our year and you make us feel so appreciated. At this unusually busy time, the special foods each day serve to keep us in the workroom, sharing ideas and energy, and valuing the incredible support of our parents! Special thanks to Coordinator Jean Pearson who has made this event so special each year! Since her daughters are moving on, we will miss her creativity and support in ways that we will always remember. Thank you, everyone!!!
Many parents sent us cards and gave us special gifts that brought us smiles, warmth and tears of joy. Your caring and "above and beyond" efforts are truly beyond words. We thank you for all you do for every one of us.
The PTO has arranged for a special Book Fair to happen the last week of school. It is not a fundraiser but simply a service project. This "Buy One, Get One Free" deal will provide your children with fun books to read for the summer! Plan to stop in the Media Center during Spring Zing on May 23-24th.
The end of the school year is within sight! We are now doing weekly newsletters to better communicate all of the activities. Please look for these each Friday!

We have just received only the 3rd grade CSAP Reading Scores, due to reports that must be generated this time of year. We will be sending all of these parent reports home with your child's report card. Parents can expect the rest of the CSAP scores when you return to school in the fall. It should also include several standardized tests that your child may have taken this spring.
This year our 3rd grade reading scores were the lowest they have been. Each year scores reflect performance of a different group of students.
2005 At/Above Proficient: 74% 2004 At/Above Proficient: 96% 2003 At/Above Proficient: 88%
While we will be analyzing them in more depth, we expected this group of students to score lower than previous classes have. Nearly all of the students who fell below Proficient are on Literacy Plans or are served in English Language Learners and/or Special Education Programs. Since Kindergarten, this class has had more students who have been operating below grade level. This is also the class that had 27 students in each classroom when they were in first grade. It is just going to take some students a little longer to reach the expected standard. We have documented some wonderful growth when we use other standardized measures. This year we had the most ELL students in the district who were not allowed to take this test; regardless, their "no score" is used in the calculation. If these "no scores" were not included, the score would have been 80% "at/above proficient."
As we do every year, we will be analyzing the performance of each child, identifying strengths and areas for growth along with other assessments. We will use this information to target their instruction next year. We appreciate the many volunteers that we have each year to help us provide smaller group instruction to address these unique needs.
Incoming Superintendent Jerry Wilson invites parents and members of the public to attend a community forum Tuesday, May 10, or to take part in an online survey May 10-13 to provide input about present issues and future opportunities for Poudre School District.
The community forum from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on May 10 will be conducted in Spanish, with a translator present. Then, a session from 7:00-8:00 p.m. will be conducted in English. Both forums will be held in the Irish Elementary School Media Center, 515 Irish Drive.
"With a new superintendent, an opportunity exists for the school community to look at issues through new eyes," says Dr. Wilson, who officially takes over as Superintendent in July, but is spending four days in May and several days in June in Fort Collins meeting with staff, students, parents, and community members. He also met with staff and community members several days in March and early April.
"We are holding two meetings at Irish Elementary School in order to listen to parents and community members' suggestions for the district," says Dr. Wilson.
The online survey and meetings, along with numerous individual and small group meetings with students, staff, and community members, will help the new superintendent understand how people currently view the District as well as present ideas they have for the future, according to Dr. Wilson.
To access the online survey the week of May 10-13, visit the PSD website at www.psdschools.org and click on PSD Community Survey under "News & Events."

The History of Rock and Roll was enthusiastically shared with us through music, drama, and dance! Congratulations for sharing your musical talents and your enthusiasm for performing as a team! They are ready for Junior High!!! Outstanding job, Sixth Grade! |
Special thanks to our PTO who has unselfishly served our school to generate both extra funding and opportunities for the school community to network and strengthen friendships. Their relentless efforts have yielded incredible resources, especially during difficult times. I especially want to thank our President Jennifer Burkhart who kept the PTO "ship" running at full speed with a crew who independently managed their own special areas. Your PTO parents have spent many extra hours working on these special projects. Many, many thanks to all of you who served so well and to the many others who "stepped up to the plate" when needed. This team is to be commended for another outstanding year of support to Shepardson students, staff and parents!
