It's that time of year when plays, special projects, and field trips captivate the enthusiasm and pride of the students. Kindergarten children (and the rest of us) have anxiously watched new chicks and ducks hatching. Watching the sixth graders perform their personal poetry in the Auditorium of Fossil Ridge High School demonstrated clearly how much these students have grown academically and personally through the year and for many of them since they were in Kindergarten! And this list of special events goes on! Many, many thanks to the teachers, staff and many parents who have helped make these events happen. Your attendance at these events is a clear message to your children how much you value their hard work. Thanks for coming and sharing these special days with us.
Special thanks to Greg Neal who helped our 4th, 5th and 6th grade students perform their personal best at the annual PSD Track and Field Days last Saturday. Notice the many students who performed exceedingly well that day! Thanks to PTO and all of the families who were involved in making the Annual Sock Hop another highly successful and fun event! Thanks to all for taking time to spend these special moments with your children. YOU are all what makes Shepardson a wonderful place to learn and grow!
This is the time of year when new committees are formed. This year we are pleased to have more parents than positions interested in School Improvement Team (SIT). Our bylaws dictate that we must have an election. Attached to this newsletter is your "official ballot," including a statement from each parent. Please take 2 minutes to review their interest and vote. All ballots need to be in the school office by next Wednesday, May 18th. Many thanks to all who have shown an interest in being active leaders as parents in our school operation! Together we can reach the stars!
Have a wonderful weekend with your family!

First of all, thanks to Music Teacher Caren Everett who commits so many extra hours each year to enable each class to perform its own program. She finished this week with the Choir performing at local institutions as well as an evening performance for all of us! Thank you, Caren, for all you do to help children learn to value music at a performance level! Congratulations to all of the 5th and 6th graders who have been in Choir this year! Your commitment to this group makes you STARS! Thanks for sharing your talents and interests with us! Congratulations to the Kindergarten students for their first formal music performance! This year they came dressed as FISH or other sea creatures and actually performed a musical! What a special gift that was for all of us!

READING RAINBOW CONTEST
Congratulations to Evan T.S. Bode from Mrs. Hanford's 1st grade class for his achievement in the Eleventh Annual Rocky Mountain PBS Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest. Approximately 710 children entered their stories in the contest and Evan's book, "Adventure in Rug-a-Land," won 1st place in his grade level. In mid-May, the winners will be announced on PBS during children's programming and you will be able to view Evan's book online at www.rmpbs.org/kids.
As a first place winner, Evan's story will go on to compete in the National Reading Rainbow contest. Good luck Evan! We know this is a dream come true and we are all proud of you!
This year two of our students worked very hard and were selected as our Grade Level Winners! Congratulations, Marina Dilley (grade 3) and Evan Bode (grade 1). Doing your best work can offer unexpected rewards!
To create positive energy around Earth Day, Waste-Not Recycling sponsored a Poster Contest. We were tickled to have 33 students submit posters. Of these students, Shepardson had 4 major winners. These posters will be on display in the community. The two top winners can be seen on the company's website: http://waste-not.com/news.htm Congratulations to all who participated!
This year two sixth graders were selected to represent Shepardson for this prestigious honor. They were featured at a special community ceremony on May 5th at Poudre High School along with all of the winners in the school district. Their hard work efforts were recognized. Congratulations, Jacob Cordova and Miranda Blas.
Miranda Blas is a hard-working, cheerful student at Shepardson Elementary School. She is involved in student council, choir, and peer mediation. As a natural leader in sixth grade, she is eager to help anyone that needs it. In fact, she is the leader for several committees involved with Earth Day and the MLK day celebration. Her enthusiasm at school is infectious despite the difficult obstacles she has dealt with through the years. Not only does Miranda have a positive attitude but she also strives to be the best she can be in school. She is especially talented in art and will be displaying her art at a restaurant soon. Overall, Miranda is a wonderful, well-rounded citizen and an excellent example for every one. She is a student like no other and we consider ourselves fortunate to have a student like her.

I would like to nominate Jacob Cordova, a sixth grader at Shepardson Elementary, for the Cinco de Mayo Award. Jacob has been in my homeroom for the past school year. He is a leader in the classroom and with his sixth grade peers. He is honest, trustworthy, and not afraid to stand up for what is right. I have heard him on numerous occasions get everyone "back in line". He has a great sense for what is fair and equitable, and not only treats everyone with respect, but models this for others. At school he is a bus buddy helping younger students catch the bus everyday. He is strong academically and is a responsible student. He has strong communication skills and a great sense of humor making him well - liked and respected by his peers. Jacob plays baseball, football and basketball. He plays three instruments: clarinet, saxophone and guitar. Jacob's integrity has made him a leader at Shepardson. I am proud to nominate him for this award.

The snow stopped and the clouds opened up for a 2 - hour window for this year's Cindy Mueller Memorial 4K Run and Walk. Approximately 90 participants, ranging in age from 4 years old to 55+ years young, braved the "iffy" weather on May 1st, and once again it was a great family event. Thank you to this year's sponsors; RunLimited/ Foot of the Rockies, Century 21, NEXGEN Lending, David Dilley and State Farm Insurance, Randy Ewan and Re/Max Realty, Central Discount Brokers, Peak Promotions, Murray Therapy, Grey Rock Family Practice and Craft Trophies. Thank you as well to the many volunteers who helped at this year's race, including numerous teachers and staff at Shepardson, Starbucks, the Boy Scouts, and a special thank you to Greg Neal and Jo Dee Swets for the many hours of preparation leading up to the race. Although this event is not organized as a fundraiser, we actually did make a profit, and those funds will be put towards a new set of risers for the many musical performances we enjoy each year. This year's medal winners were:
Thank you to everyone who came out to participate. Our goal is to create a fun, family oriented event centered around a healthy activity. If there are any questions or suggestions for how we could improve this annual event, please contact Jo Dee Swets, Greg Neal or Rea Kreider at 226-6370. |

Please listen to your children if they are complaining of a sore throat. Shepardson has 9 confirmed cases of "Strep" and we are taking precautions to control the spread of more cases.
Description: A bacterial infection which can cause: fever, sore throat and oozing & redness of the tonsils & nasal section of the throat. Not every sore throat is a strep throat-a lab test with a throat swab is the ONLY way to diagnose if strep is present. Scarlet fever is a combination of strep throat and a skin rash, but is no more serious that strep throat without a rash. Rheumatic fever (affecting the valves of the heart), however, is a serious complication which can be prevented by prompt appropriate treatment of strep throat.
Treatment: Incubation period is 1-3 days. Untreated persons remain infectious as long as they are sick; usually only 3-7 days. If treated with Penicillin or other effective antibiotics as prescribed by a Dr., an infected person is only contagious for about 24 hours after treatment begins.
Control of Spread: Strep throat is spread by inhaling or ingesting airborne droplets from an ill person. Spread is usually by sneezing or coughing, or indirectly by contact with hands or objects contaminated with nose or mouth discharges of an infected person. Strep may also be spread through contaminated raw milk/milk products and food.

The current editor of the newsletter, Kevin Smith, is retiring after this year. We are searching for a replacement. If you want the chance to learn Microsoft Publisher, a chance to change the newsletter to a format you prefer, and to make a great contribution to Shepardson, then this is the job for you. All that is required is a home PC with e-mail, Windows, and either a writable CD drive or high speed internet. The software is provided by the school district. Kevin can help with the training. Preparing the newsletter takes about 2 hours once every two weeks. Contact either Mary Kay or Kevin for more details (kevin_n_smith@hotmail.com 282-7300).
If nobody steps up, then Mary Kay will be forced to do the newsletter herself. She already works 24x7, so do the right thing and volunteer!

This May is shorter than most and we find we have even more tasks that usual. We could use more volunteers the next two weeks. If you can spare some time, please call the office with your availability and we'll connect you. Thanks so much.
All medications that were kept at school this year need to be picked up by a parent/guardian before the last day of school-reminders will be mailed home.
If you anticipate your student needing meds at Shepardson again next year or at any of the junior high schools for your soon to be 7th grader ie: for asthma inhaler, headaches, pain related to braces, menstrual cramps-pick up a med permission form in the health office before school ends and have it signed by the health care provider when they have physicals done this summer. That way you can bring the form along with medications when school starts in August. With the new code of conduct changes, carrying medication without the proper paperwork/permission, can be written as a first offense.
If your child has a medical condition ie: diabetes, seizure disorder, migraines, asthma, allergies requiring Benadryl &/or an Epipen, please pick up a Health Care Action Plan from Mrs. Beckman or Mrs. Swets BEFORE school ends and have it completed by the doctor this summer so it is ready for the beginning of school next year as well.
Have a great summer and remember to wear that sunscreen!
Back by parent request!!!
We will be hosting a buy one, get one free Book Sale during Spring Zing and before and after sixth - grade graduation. The hours are Monday, May 23 12:00 (noon) to 6:00 PM and Tuesday, May 24 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Sign your child up for the summer read program and get a purple read bracelet free!
Stop in and get some great deals on books. This is not a fundraiser for the school; it is simply an opportunity to save some money on books. Volunteers are needed for the Book Sale, so if you can donate a few hours of your time to work the book fair, please call Leigh Ann Dilley at 377-3913. This is great fun and volunteers will receive a $5.00 book free for their services!
As parents of a student entering high school in the Fall and a sixth grader, my husband and I face the challenge of getting to know our children's ever increasing circle of new friends and their families. A great way to connect with other parents and feel confident that your childrenare in a safe environment when they visit these new friends is to take the"Safe Homes Pledge". This pledge is a simple promise to be present when parties or gatherings are held in your home and to follow other common sense guidelines regarding alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, violence and intimidation. When you take the pledge by September 30, 2005, your contact info will be included in the 2005-2006 Poudre School District Safe Homes Directory to be published and mailed to you in October 2005.
The more parents who participate, the more valuable the directory. Please take a few minutes to complete a simple online form (it's really easy) and participate in this worthwhile effort which is endorsed by PSD, the Fort Collins Police Department and TEAM Fort Collins. For more information or to take the pledge, visit: http://www.teamfortcollins.org/safehomes.html.
Parents of PSD students of all ages are invited to attend one of two meetings, May 18 or 19, to hear about enrollment planning and information that may impact families of students district-wide. It is likely that some of these plans will impact Shepardson.
PSD's demographer, Shannon Bingham, will present district-wide enrollment information and projections and respond to questions regarding future enrollment planning at the meetings.
The same information will be presented at both meetings, which are scheduled at the following times and locations:
No attendance area or boundary changes will be implemented until at least the fall 2006. Before any boundary or attendance area changes are recommended to the Board of Education for action, PSD will announce and hold public meetings to present all options and hear public input.
Reaction from a Shepardson Parent Who Attended Previous Boundary Meeting
In response to the proposed PSD Boundary Committee changes, I would like to invite as many parents as possible to come to the PSD enrollment planning and information meetings described above.
It is very important that we go to at least one of these meetings to be more fully informed. We are in danger of losing neighborhood 1457 (Village East). If you are from this neighborhood and now elect to come to Shepardson, we need your voice! Additionally, the Boundary Committee has a plan to bus ALL Shepardson neighborhood children to Lesher Junior High. This would eliminate your child's ability to walk to Junior High. IF YOU'RE UPSET, please come to the meeting. If you have any questions, please call and/or email me.
