Last week I watched with pride and admiration at the 25 students who qualified for the school's annual spelling bee. When I think about what our students need to be successful in their life, one thought surfaces strongly. They need to be willing, confident and have the courage to take healthy risks!
I watched four 4th graders, eleven 5th graders and ten 6th graders stand in front of their classmates listening to words they may have never even read, thinking about what might be the best way to spell that word, and then sharing their best thinking at that moment in a microphone. What internal strength and courage it takes to try things that make us feel uncomfortable! At times, words were spelled with enthusiasm and confidence. But the shock and surprise on some of their faces when they sometimes spelled a word correctly was worth a million dollars! The quiet acceptance of spelling a word wrong is also part of the experience for everyone but just one...Congratulations, Steven Tang! Each student handled this disappointment with poise and grace while managing their stress to perform their best. Imagine spelling words orally in front of an audience like:
Exonerate
Extraneous
Coalesce
With the final word this year: extemporaneous!
I also want to equally extend this sense of pride to all students who participated in any part of this spelling bee process. A special thanks to their parents for providing the encouraging support needed for your child to accept this challenge and to Becky Woodcox who spent so many hours encouraging students and organizing this event! I am confident that each child who seeks such challenges available to them will find much success in their life!
Next week is National School Counselors Week (Feb. 4-10). We rely heavily on our counselor Rea Kreider to assist us in helping children and their families in so many different ways. This week is a great time to email or send Rea a quick note about how he has influenced or affected your child and/or family. On behalf of the staff and parents, Rea, we thank you for caring so much for all of us!
Have a wonderful weekend with your family!

The purpose of Poudre School District's evaluation system is to improve instruction, enhance the implementation of curricular programs, and measure professional growth and development as well as the level of performance of its teachers. At the elementary level, parents are given an opportunity to give input on teachers who are being evaluated. After the results are compiled, principals use the data in conjunction with other parts of the evaluation process.
If your child has a teacher who is being evaluated this school year, you will be given the opportunity to give input on that teacher. The directions for submitting your input will be sent home to parents during the week of January 30.
This year parents will be able to respond on-line. You may also be asked to respond about a specials teacher who is also on the formal evaluation cycle. The computers at school may also be available for you to use for this purpose as well as before and after school until 3:30. If we can help you in other ways, just let us know. Your input is highly valuable as we continue to grow professionally.
We thank you for completing surveys.

Congratulations, Stephanie Hamrick, for receiving honorable mention in the James L. Voss Veterinary Medical Center 2006 Open House poster contest! Stephanie received honorable mention in the 6th grade category for her poster submission based on the theme of 'What animals mean to me.' She will receive a certificate of achievement from Terra Dawes, representative of the Veterinary Medical Center. |
Each year Shepardson asks students in grades 3 through 6 to complete the PSD Student Attitude Survey. The survey asks students to respond to a set of 20 statements about how they feel being at their school. Sample statements include "I like going to this school, The homework I am assigned helps me to be a better student, Students treat each other with respect, and I like my principal." We trust that students respond honestly to these statements and we study the results to help improve our learning environment and the services we offer students. As the counselor I am especially interested in responses to any statement reflecting how students are interacting with each other, how safe they feel at school, and if they feel they have someone to talk to if they have a problem. Results from this survey will be back within the next few weeks and I will report back to you in a future newsletter.
Mix It Up Day, sponsored by the Shepardson Student Council will take place on Wednesday February 8th at lunch. On this day, students in 1st through 6th grades will be challenged to sit with students they might not normally choose to sit with. Last year we were surprised to see a number of students who had a difficult time with this activity. We see it as an opportunity for children to "reach out of their comfort zones" and to practice confidence and good manners as they have a conversation with someone new. Perhaps you could practice with your child at home to help prepare them for lunch next Wednesday.
CSAP Testing season is fast approaching. 3rd graders will start with Reading Assessments on Tuesday February 14th and Thursday February 16th. Then after spring vacation we have a testing window between March 20th and April 12th during which time 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders will all be taking CSAP tests. More information about how you can support your children during the March-April testing sessions will be coming in future newsletters. For now, please try to schedule around these dates as you think ahead about vacations, doctor appointments or any other reasons your child to be absent from school.
Mary Kay has already made mention of National School Counselor Week. Let me close by saying to all of you that it is a pleasure to work within a school community where parents take such a strong interest in the well being of their children. One of my usual greetings when I walk into our 6th grade classrooms is "Good morning 6th grade students of Shepardson and future leaders of the world." What more valuable resource do we have than our children? I appreciate the opportunity to help guide yours along their journey.

The 2006 Shepardson Oral Spelling Bee was held on Friday, January 27. Twenty-five 4th - 6th grade students participated in the Bee. And what an event it was! Our students excelled in the event, spelling such words as phenomenon, smorgasbord, and psyche. It was an impressive event, and it was exciting to see and hear the students spelling a variety of challenging words. We're proud of all our GREAT spellers. Special recognition goes to the top six spellers:
Participants in the 2006 Shepardson Spelling Bee were:
4th Grade: Antonio Franco, Danielle Lawson, Dean Lawson, and Shannon Seale Also, special thanks to Kathy Fourcroy for helping with Spelling Bee practices throughout the year! She's been a great resource for the kids and a great support of the Spelling Bee at Shepardson for many years. Thanks, too, to Mr. Kreider for his help with the Bee, and to Nancy McConnell and Jan Hoffman for serving as judges at this year's Bee. And last, but not least, thanks to all the staff at Shepardson who lend their support to this program! Happy Spelling! Mrs. Woodcox |

As Outreach Workers for the District we have found there is a need that continually arises within all of our schools; the dream and desire of some of our more needy students to have an operable computer at home. We believe that there are many computers in the community that would serve the needs of these students, however, our problem thus far has been that the available donated computers have had their hard drives cleaned out, and thus are left without operable programs. The expense of putting basic operating software on these old computers is financially prohibitive for most of the population that we are working to serve. If you have an operable computer that you would like to donate please call Angie Joseph at 218-7275 or Shepardson at 226-6370.
Thank you for your help.
