    Kindergarten makes us smile!
    PRINCIPAL REFLECTIONS

We are currently immersed in the special " National Teacher Appreciation Week" which we use to honor and recognize all the staff who helps children learn. We want to thank the many parents who shared their culinary talents, their special words of support, and many other ways of thanking the Shepardson team. A couple meals were especially appreciated during this busy time of year. It's fun to leave our leftovers home or not eat another frozen dinner...for there is not much time for us to leave and return to the school for lunch. We thank YOU for making this week very special.

One of our favorite "gifts" is the notes from parents. Taking some of your precious time to share what we've done to help your child and/or your family serves to keep our energy and enthusiasm for teaching strong. The rewards for teaching come in the eyes of your children. We love coming to "work" every day to help each child grow and develop a love for learning. Thanks for sharing your young "gifts" with us every day!

Kindergarten has such a special way of making us smile! The chicks, ducks and geese have hatched and have found new homes. Only one found an adventure while here. The eagerness to learn can always be found in young children!

A special wish for all Mothers everywhere! Happy Mothers Day!!

    Make every day special!

Best Wishes to Colleen, Gayle, Libby, and Cece!
BEST WISHES TO COLLEEN, CECE, GAYLE AND LIBBY!

At this time, we have four teachers who will be leaving Shepardson after serving us for over a total of 39 years which equates to about 1000 children's lives here they have nurtured, strengthened and encouraged to become their best self. Please help us thank them for their service to children at Shepardson and elsewhere as we wish them our best in their next chapter!

    Our Retirement Friends...

They have left their mark upon the staff, their students and the school community in general. They are truly Shepardson STARS who will always shine in our hearts, thankful for their selfless giving of expertise, time and caring to Shepardson!

Mrs. Colleen DelMonte --- 26 years of teaching, 19 at Shepardson!

Currently teaching 3rd grade but has taught classrooms in grades 2-4 and also has been our special education teacher serving all grades and multiple needs. Colleen was one of the instrumental visionaries who helped Shepardson create an inclusive school dedicated to ensuring that each child feels that strong sense of belonging. Her mark is truly one that will live beyond her.

Colleen and her husband Tom, already retired teacher and principal, will now be able to travel together and spend time with family.

Mrs. Cece Cooke --- 28+ years of teaching, 15 at Shepardson!

Currently teaching 5th grade but has taught grades 3-5 here and has even had classrooms in the middle of pods. One year she moved three times due to changes in her class size. We thank Cece for all of the extra time she has spent through the years helping us ensure that we meet the needs of all students. She has focused extra energy on nutrition, health and serving our "gifted" students. She continues to be an inspiration to us!

Cece and her husband Alex plan to sail the seas in a boat! We wish them the best and look forward to their seafaring stories.

    Our "Moving On" Friends....

Mrs. Gayle Eberhardt --- 5 years of teaching, 3 at Shepardson!

Currently teaching sixth grade. Gayle's husband, Jason, received his doctorate in veterinary medicine this week, which is naturally followed by an internship in Columbus, OH. Gayle has especially contributed in areas of gifted, literacy and gender issues while completing her masters. Shepardson has been a special "family" to her. We are working hard to help her continue teaching in this new state.

Mrs. Libby Gleason --- 6 years of teaching, 3 at Shepardson

Currently teaching morning kindergarten and is the director of the Read to Achieve grant for many primary students. Libby taught Kdg, PE, and reading in Carbondale prior to Shepardson. Libby was married since she arrived here. After her husband David completes his military assignment in Iraq this summer, they will take a year off and tour the world. She will miss the specialness of the Shepardson family but is anxiously looking forward to finally being able to spend quality time with her "groom."

Reading Rainbow Writing Contest Award Winner
    EVAN BODE WINS AGAIN!!!

Shepardson Student Wins Award in Reading Rainbow Writing Contest

A Shepardson Elementary 2nd-grader has placed in the 12th annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest through Rocky Mountain PBS. This is the second consecutive year 8-year-old Evan Bode has placed in the contest. This year Bode won 3rd place in the 2nd-grade division for his story Adventure Under the Trap Door. The story is a sequel to his story Adventure in Rug-A-Land, which placed first in his division in last year's contest.

Bode began writing stories when he was 2-years-old. Consequently, he has written about 400 stories which his parents have had bound. Bode said his writing inspiration often comes from other books that excite him. "I just start brainstorming stories and then I write them down," he said, adding that he would like to write novels and movies when he grows up.

Shana Bode, Evan's mother, said the contest coordinator told Evan it was unprecedented to place two years in a row in the contest. She said the contest was a good experience for Evan who also entered the writing contest when he was in kindergarten, but did not win an award. "He was disappointed when he didn't win and he almost didn't enter again," she said. "It's a lesson in don't give up."

Approximately 680 students entered the contest this year. The winners will be announced on television and stories will be available to view online by June. Bode's award-winning story from last year is presently online at www.rmpbs.org.

This article is currently the featured news item on the Poudre School District's webpage at http://www.psdschools.org/. Way to go, Evan! We join your parents in being so proud of you and your teacher, Mrs. Hanford!

    ATTENTION THIRD GRADE PARENTS

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) was administered to all third graders in November of 2005 to help find out more about the student's reasoning abilities and to determine the need for gifted and talented services. Score reports will be mailed to parents this next week. In addition to receiving a percentile score, parents can gain access to other valuable learning tools by logging onto www.cogat.com.

If you have further questions please feel free to contact Dr. Sommers, Mr. Kreider, or Margo Miller.

SHEPARDSON PTO IS A SHINING STAR!

Special thanks to our PTO who has unselfishly served our school to generate both extra funding and opportunities for the school community to network and strengthen friendships. Their relentless efforts have yielded incredible resources, especially during difficult times. I especially want to thank our President Jennifer Burkhart who kept the PTO "ship" running at full speed with a crew who independently managed their own special areas. Your PTO parents have spent many extra hours working on these special projects. Many, many thanks to all of you who served so well and to the many others who "stepped up to the plate" when needed. This team is to be commended for another outstanding year of support to Shepardson students, staff and parents!

    SPECIAL THANKS TO SPECIAL TEAMS!

There are so many parents who help us accomplish goals that would not be possible otherwise. There are not enough words to express our deep appreciation for all everyone does.

The School Improvement Team (SIT) meets monthly or more to discuss teaching and learning issues, district issues such as boundary, and specific programs and staffing that serve Shepardson students. They also review school goals and budget.

Parents leaving after at least 2 years on SIT:

Parents returning for next year's team:

If you have an interest in serving on SIT, please contact the school office.

The Newsletter Team is phenomenal and their service to our community is immeasurable!

Webmaster:   David Roschke (who is retiring and we do not have a replacement yet)
Layout Editors:   Hania Sakkal and Robin Binder
    Spanish Translator:   Jennifer Burkhart
    Printers:   Nancy McConnell, Yoshiko Kuno

Becky Haberecht has served as our Volunteer Coordinator for a couple years. Her hard work has resulted in 435 volunteers being registered to serve at Shepardson. As a result, Shepardson is ahead of the "game" that will require this level of registration in the future. We want to formally thank Becky for her relentless efforts to connect our parents with the volunteer program. Her efforts and all of you who are now available to us have been our greatest resource! We thank Becky for her years of service in this special role!
