What is Accelerated Reader? Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized reading incentive and management program that provides information about each student's reading. Using a combined system of vocabulary level, length of the book and level of difficulty, the book is assigned a reading level. Points are awarded when reading tests are successfully completed by the student. A student receives the full point value for 100% and the points decrease as the correct number of questions answered decreases.

The program is designed, in part, for students to increase their reading practice by reading more and better books. It gives teachers a precise, effortless record of how much and how well each student is doing. To use the Accelerated Reader, a student reads a book from the program's booklist, then tests his or her knowledge and comprehension by answering multiple-choice questions. The computer handles all scoring and record-keeping automatically, achieving closure by immediately presenting the student with a score.

How does it work? Students select a book at their reading level. This level is determined by a standardized test (STAR) given to each student. The student reads the book and then takes a multiple choice AR test. The AR program calculates the score and maintains records for each student. The program tracks the books a student tests on and the score they receive. The reading level, difficulty, length of the book read, and the test score determine the number of points earned.

The program corrects the test and generates a printout for the teacher on how the child did on that book. If the child does not pass the test, he or she has to read another book. The test cannot simply be retaken. Each test is worth a certain number of points which are also recorded by the computer. A student can use these points to exchange for a variety of things based on a school or homeroom teacher decision. A class composite reading score is available as well as a printout for each individual child. The computer keeps track of all books read by an individual student.

Students select a book from the Accelerated Reader list which is of interest to them and within their reading range. A student's range is determined by STAR. After a student reads a book from the Accelerated Reader list, they take a computerized test. Comprehension and vocabulary are tested. The student will receive points determined by the number of questions they answer correctly. Students have a point goal set by their teacher.
