Pablo Ruiz y Picasso

born: Malaga, Spain; 25 October 1881

Life Events

After visiting an exhibition of children's drawings: "When I was their age I could draw like Raphael, but it took me a lifetime to learn to draw like them."

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

Pablo Picasso had several distinct phases during his long career, including his Blue Period, and his later Rose Period. He began his blue paintings in 1901 reflecting his sadness at a friend's death. Directly after his Blue Period, Picasso moved on to his Rose Period in 1905. One of Picasso's most creative phases took place between 1908 and 1912 and is known as Analytical Cubism.

In the first six years in Paris, Picasso moved from the Toulouse Lautrec "cabaret style" of painting (1901) to the Blue Period (1901-1904) to the Rose Period (1904-1907) and then the Cubist Period (1907-1917). For the rest of his life--from age twenty six to ninety two--he was to frequent these styles again and again.

Blue Period 1901-1904

Self, 1901
Self was painted in 1901 and is a very sad painting. It is a man and it is sad because he looks blue and poor. He looks like he has no food because his cheeks are pushed in. His hair is black and smooth. His eyes are brown. He has a mustache and a goatee and they are black. He has a black jacket with a yellow green button. His lips are red. His skin is white. In the background it is blue. This is one of my favorite paintings by Pablo Picasso.

I like Picasso's oil on canvas Self Portrait picture with a mysterious man and a blue background. The mysterious man, Picasso, looks mad in his soul and sad, too. He pops out because of the blue background. Picasso's oil on canvas looks like oil pastels. Picasso's blue period is the saddest period that the man is in. Picasso's self portraits are in other periods that he painted, too. In the end, I wish we would do more on Picasso.

The Old Guitar Player, 1903
I like that picture because he is sad and he looks like he did not have any food or water. The picture was mostly blue. Picasso drew that picture because his best friend, Monet, died.

By Cesar

The Old Guitar Player, painted by Pablo Picasso, is interesting because blue is my favorite color and I like guitars. He is an old man. He is sad. He plays his guitar bent down. All in all, it is sad.

By Ryan

The Old Guitar Player painting by Picasso shows how he uses color and lines to show how he is feeling. The painting has a lot of blue in the background. He also used a lot of blue because he was showing he was sad. Picasso put some lines on the man's face to make him look sad. His head is down playing the guitar sadly, lonely and he looks like he is starving to death. Probably that is why he is sad.

The Tragedy, 1903

Rose Period 1905-1907

Self, 1906

Boy with Dog, 1906
Boy with Dog is very serious and happy. There are a lot of pale looks in it. The colors are muted and it looks like it is made to be sad. It is in the Rose Period, so it is happy. The painting has a dog and a boy. The painting looks like the point of view is out by the lake. The painting is my favorite because it has a dog in it and I love dogs. You can tell I learned a lot about Picasso.

Enamel Saucepan, Cubism
Enamel Saucepan looks like a weird painting because it has a lot of weird shapes like triangles and some circles. On the candles it has tons of shapes. Most of the shapes are triangles. The saucepan has sharp sides. The candle has a weird stand under it. Under all the stuff there is a reddish table. Under the candle, the stand has straight lines and a weird candle turner. As you can tell, I learned a bunch about this painting.

Enamel Saucepan is a very nice painting by Pablo Picasso. It's made out of something that I have never heard of. It is not a portrait or a landscape. It's a still life. I also like that painting because it has light colors. There are curved lines and zigzag and straight lines. There are shapes like triangles and rectangles, and a rhombus. There is black, white, blue, gold, brown, red, silver, and gray. There is a pan, candle, and a pitcher. The pan looks rough and the candle looks bumpy and the pitcher looks very rough. There are some dark lines on the candle and the pitcher. The pitcher is close to me because they cannot go any farther. I think Pablo Picasso needed to add some more colors. The table is brown, the candle is black, gold and white, and the pan is gray and blue. All in all, that's my favorite picture that was made by Pablo Picasso.

By Kat

Enamel Saucepan by Pablo Picasso is wonderful. The saucepan and the pitcher and the candle are magnificent. It has colorful things and nice work to look at like a colorful flower. The candle was brownish and it was lit. The saucepan was like a triangle and the color was blue. It also had black outlines. All in all, you can see the black outlines put together on the saucepan.

The Lesson

1917 - 1973

Portrait of Olga, 1917
Portrait of Olga was painted in 1917 by Picasso and is a portrait of a woman. The colors are black, red, pink, white, yellow, green, and brown. It makes me happy. He uses flowers in the dress. He uses a lot of black. Olga has beautiful eyes. It is beautiful. This is my favorite picture because she is a beautiful woman.

The Three Musicians, 1921

Lovers, 1923
Lovers is a sad painting. I feel sad when I look at this picture. There are colors in this picture. There are red, blue, yellow, purple, white, green and brown. The faces make me sad. There are lots of bright colors. There is a man and women in this picture. They are standing. This painting was fun to do.

By Cheyenne

The Lovers by Picasso makes me feel good. He is in love. I think he will propose. They're inside. I think they are in the girl's house. It has a window and two curtains in the house. She is wearing a green hat. He is wearing red all over and he has brown hair. She has yellow pants. They both have brown hair. She has a white shirt. She has a very long hat. It looks like his eyes are shut. She has one unibrow. She has a see-through hat. This picture is real. The artist is Picasso.

By Andrew

Lovers is a good example of how people look when they're in love. The picture of lovers has a boy and girl by a building and they look happy together and in love. The colors in the painting are really bright colors. The girl has brown hair and eyes. They boy is wearing red clothes and his hair is brown. I like the painting a lot because it doesn't have the shapes like other Cubism paintings. This picture is really cool and I hope you will think it is cool, too.

By Crystal

The Lovers makes me feel really happy. In this picture I see a boy hugging a girl. They are wearing clothes. The colors are bright red, bright yellow, bright green, and bright white. I could tell they were in a house because I saw the window. Also if you are looking correctly you will see that their hair is the same color. All in all, it was my favorite painting.

Cat and Wounded Bird
Cat and Wounded Bird is a cool picture because I think the cat is interesting. Picasso uses thin lines and dull colors. In the picture the bird has a wounded wing. The cat is chomping on the bird's wing. Cat has bird in his mouth and the guts of the bird are coming out. The cat has white sharp claws. The cat is very fat. This picture is Cubism even though there are no triangles. I learned a lot from this painting.

Lobster and Cat
Lobster and Cat is an excellent painting of Picasso's because it shows how he used curvy lines, colors, shapes and a lot of brown to show a feeling of sadness. Picasso's painting makes me feel sad because Picasso made a painting that had a lobster that killed a cat. He used a lot of different colors. Picasso used different things in his painting like outlining. Picasso used different shapes in his painting. The lobster and the cat are fighting together. It is my favorite painting because it is one of Picasso's sad paintings.

By Luis

Lobster and Cat is an excellent painting by Picasso. I think the lines are perfect zigzag, curvy and straight lines. The lobster's back is a perfect trangle and the cat's body is a perfect circle. It has a lot of zigzag patterns. The lobster and the cat are fighting. I hope you like it, too.

I like the sculpture, Ceramic. It is wild. It is weird. It is ceramic. It is a face. It has a lot of patterns like an X and lines and dots. I like it a lot.

Self, 1972
I like the Self Portrait of Picasso because his eyes are weird. His eyes are weird because one is small and one is big. The part around the eyes is diamond shaped. The nose looks like a real one. All in all, the portrait of Picasso is great.
