5030 English
9: This course is designed to enhance students' written skills
and their understanding of various types of literature. Using the
six-state/district graduation standards as a framework, students
are assessed on a variety of forms of writing, including expository
and essays, research projects and creative works. Through these
assignments, students work on the use of complex sentence patterns,
focus and development of ideas, correct usage of the mechanics of
writing, and proofreading/revision techniques. The literature studied
includes short stories, poetry, non-fiction works, novels (To Kill
a Mockingbird. The Odyssey) and drama ("Romeo and Juliet").
Particular attention is given to the author's contribution in regards
to his/her culture, the use of literary devices, and the concept
of theme, particularly in relation to the students' own lives.
5034 Pre

and standards as English 9, but is designed to emphasize the skills

English courses and the Advanced Placement exam. Students will be

the higher order thinking skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
